Writing your first novel is both exciting and daunting. For years, I kept the idea tucked away, waiting for the right time, enough confidence, or a better story. In reality, perfect timing doesn’t exist—you simply need to take that first step. This marks my beginning.
Why a Novel? Why Now?
Stories have always meant a lot to me. The books I cherish didn’t just provide entertainment; they shifted my perspective on the world, people, and even myself. Writing a novel transports me from reader to creator. So, why now? Because waiting hasn’t moved me forward. Eventually, I realized the distinction between aspiring writers and actual writers is this: those who write make progress—imperfectly, inconsistently, sometimes painfully—but they keep writing nonetheless.
The Blank Page Problem
Let’s face it: getting started is tough. An empty page can feel intimidating. What if my idea isn’t good? What if I lose motivation? What if everything I write is awful? Here’s what I’m learning: it probably will be rough at first, and that’s perfectly fine. First drafts don’t need to be flawless—they simply need to exist. You can’t revise a blank page, but you can turn messy beginnings into meaningful stories.
My Plan (hopefully)
I don’t have every detail figured out, but I do try to follow certain principles:
· Write regularly, even if only a little at a time
· Focus on making progress rather than being perfect
· Let the story change as it develops
· Stay curious about my characters and their journeys
Some days will be productive; others won’t. The aim isn’t producing consistent results—it’s consistently showing up.
What This Blog Will Be
This blog serves as a record of the journey—the successes, struggles, doubts, and small victories. While writing a novel can feel isolating, sharing the experience might lessen that solitude. If you’ve considered writing your own novel, perhaps this will be your sign to start. We don’t have to know everything beforehand. We just have to begin.
